If I were starting a theater company today, and I had a limit of 10 people I could hire, here are the positions I’d fill:
1 – dramaturg whose specialty is finding new plays and obscure classics
1 - dramaturg whose specialty is historical research
1 - seamstress
1 - lighting designer with an interest in computer generated projections
6 - actors, at least one of which is also a playwright
And they would perform in a small arena theater.
There would be no director, set designer, technical director, or costume designer. No Artistic Director or Executive Director. No staff. Each member would be required to develop skills in a secondary area. Decisions would be made by the consensus process. Each company member would invest $5000, and net earned income would be distributed equally.
